Face to Face Work Experience for Students in Years 10-13 (Age 14-18)
Work experience is available to students that attend school or college/are residents within Sheffield, South Yorkshire only.
We are planning to return to face-to-face work experience mid to late summer 2022. All arrangements for work experience is subject to Sheffield Teaching Hospital's guidelines in regard to COVID-19 and therefore any plans may be cancelled at short notice. We are not accepting any applications at this time, information will be posted here when the application period is open for Sheffield students/residents.
Students are the workforce of the future and should be encouraged to have an introduction to the world of work in a safe and appropriate environment. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust offers a limited amount of placements to students Years 10-13 who live and attend school/college within the city of Sheffield.
The Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is committed to providing an area that is safe, supportive and affords an insight into the vast array of jobs available. In accordance with Hospital Policies, there are some restrictions to student access as stated below.
• Years 10 & 11 are not allowed in any clinical area
• Years 12 & 13 are allowed in clinical areas under supervision
• Areas restricted to all young person’s years 10-13 are Theatres, Intensive Care, areas where patient consent cannot be gained and areas where students may be put at risk of exposure to Hepatitis B or risk of TB infection
• Areas where patient consent cannot be obtained
Application Process
You will need to have gained some prior knowledge in your area of interest by attending one of the relevant virtual events below, before your application for face-to-face work experience is accepted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
You will need to complete the on-line application form; this will automatically go to your school’s careers representative for approval before being submitted to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

Date: 4 Jul 2022 Professional Area: Orthoptist-AHP Role Description: As an orthoptist, you’ll diagnose and treat eye movement disorders, as well as visual impairments related to the way the eyes interact with the brain. This means you’ll also spot serious neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Professional Area: Medical Secretary Role Description: NHS medical secretaries make sure that our frontline staff are able to dedicate their time to patient care while our personal assistants support our senior leaders. As a medical secretary or personal assistant, you'll usually work for a senior member of staff or group of staff. You'll support the work of a department by taking on administrative and secretarial tasks. Professional Area: Clinical Photography Role Description: Clinical photography is the daily recording of clinical conditions presented by patients and is used for diagnosis or for recording a condition during the stages of treatment. As a clinical photographer, you’ll provide different types of images to assist with diagnosing and treating patients. This can include specialised imagery such as thermography, 3D and ultra violet imaging as well as standard digital photography. Some clinical photographers also undertake videography. |
