Volunteering FAQ's

What STH volunteer roles can you do?

We offer a variety of volunteer roles. All are non-clinical and complement the work of our paid staff.  The roles include: Hospital Welcomers; Pharmacy Runners; Arts Activities volunteers; Clothing Project Volunteers plus many more.

Where are volunteers based?

Volunteers are based at four hospitals in Sheffield – The Jessop Wing, The Northern General Hospital, The Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Weston Park Cancer Hospital. Some volunteers work within the community.

What will I receive by volunteering at STH?

The Voluntary Services Team will provide comprehensive training and support, to help you provide the best service possible and get the most out of your volunteering. Through regular contact, we will ensure you are happy in your role and have opportunities to develop.

Our recent surveys show that volunteers at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals gain confidence, make new friends, learn new skills and enjoy the experience of working in a hospital setting. Some of our volunteers progress to employment with the Trust

On joining, you will automatically become a member of the Trust.  We encourage all volunteers to participate in the Trust’s activities.

How do I apply to Volunteer?

You must be aged 16* or above; there is no upper age limit for applications. We do not ask for formal qualifications - simply that you are friendly, caring, approachable and reliable. You must be willing to commit to volunteer with us for at least 3 hours a week for 6 months and undergo the relevant recruitment checks and mandatory training.

Before you can take up a volunteer role shortlisted applicants are invited to an Information Briefing Session.  If successful through this process all volunteers complete the Trust’s mandatory training and any role specific training that is required.  The team also carry out required clearances including references, Occupational Health Check and DBS check.
