Get involved

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please do take the time to read the information in all sections of this site.

If all your questions have not been answered, please use the details on the Contact Us page to get in touch with us.

Please note the following;

  • We require a weekly time commitment of between 34 hours per week (depending on role) for a minimum period of 6 months. If you cannot commit to this please do not apply.
  • Each month we recruit usually from the 1st to the 15th of the month.
  • The volunteering opportunities available each month can be found on our dedicated recruitment page accessed via the link below where you can also fill in an application form. The opportunities will change each month depending on demand within the hospitals and availability of volunteering shifts.
  • Once recruitment closes, we will contact all shortlisted applicants within 2 weeks for an informal chat and a decision will be made following this on the suitability of each applicant.
  • You must be willing to undertake the relevant recruitment checks, including DBS (criminal records check) where appropriate, as well as completing our mandatory training.
  • Due to the above, it may take a number of weeks from application to commencing in role.
  • Volunteering is not a work placement and the Voluntary Services Team are not able to complete course workbooks associated with college courses.
  • Following completion of a placement, a reference can only be provided if the volunteer has completed the minimum commitment of 6 months or the equivalent number of hours volunteering.

Are you under 18?

If you are under 18 we offer a bespoke volunteering scheme each autumn called Team Impact. We do not recruit volunteers under 18 years of age at other times of year. For more information please contact us.

You may also wish to look at NHS Cadets, a scheme with St John Ambulance Service (not run by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals) https://www.sja.org.uk/get-involved/young-people/nhs-cadets/

Are you looking for work experience? If so, please see the dedicated page for this on the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals website. Work experience is a separate service run by another department https://brilliantplace.sth.nhs.uk/work-experience.html
