Research & Innovation
Without research and innovation, advances in health and care wouldn’t be possible. Research and innovation are crucial for advancing patient care, enabling doctors and clinicians to better understand how diseases work, address pressing health problems whilst also looking to discover new ways to improve the quality of life for people in our communities and beyond.
We have a long history of carrying out pioneering research and innovation, and many of our research breakthroughs are evident in healthcare settings across the world today.
We run hundreds of research studies at any given moment, across a wide range of health conditions, including dementia, diabetes, heart disease, respiratory conditions and many types of cancer. Research can take place in the hospital or the community.
Our research studies range from observational surveys looking at quality of life, to cutting-edge clinical trials of new medicines, surgical procedures and medical devices.
There are several ways you can get involved in research:
If you are a patient at our hospital, you may be invited to take part in a clinical trial.
As well as patients, many of our studies involve healthy volunteers, or those who do not have a current condition.
Your experience helps ensure our research is relevant to public need.
Everyone can take part in research. Sign up to the Be Part of Research registry.
About our research
Our research changes lives, improving care and driving the development of new treatments and technologies that could transform future healthcare. We are home to 19,000 staff, who work across a wide range of medical specialities including emergency medicine, cardiology, respiratory care, cancer care and community healthcare to name but a few. Individually, many of our doctors and clinicians are internationally renowned in their field, delivering and collaborating on high quality research to address health problems and build vital evidence to improve disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes. Collectively and collaboratively, our teams are recognised leaders in medical research for bone, cardiac, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neurosciences and long-term conditions such as diabetes and lung disease. We also hold Centre of Excellence status for many services where research is having a key impact on patient’s lives, including for brain tumour and myeloma care.
We also play a key role in the training and education of medical, nursing and dental students with our academic partners, including the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam.
