Stereotactic Radiosurgery is the delivery of highly focused radiation to small intracranial targets, whilst sparing the adjacent healthy tissue. This aims to achieve control of a tumour, or thrombo-obliteration in the case of a vascular lesion.
The service here in Sheffield utilises the Leksell Gamma Knife for Radiosurgery treatments. Different models of Gamma Knife have been used over the years with the state-of-the-art Gamma Knife Esprit due to be installed in late 2022.
We currently treat approximately 900 patients per year and the radiosurgery physics team supports the service through activities which include:
• Radiation dose planning
• Imaging and dosimetric QA
• Analysis of follow-up imaging
• MDT support
• Treatment record database management
• Management of an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system
• Service development and research
