The Cardiovascular Research Patient Panel
The Cardiovascular Research Patient Panel is a vital part of the Academic Directorate of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The panel is made up of patients, relatives, carers and members of the public who, for various reasons, have an interest in cardiology and cardiothoracic research. These people have volunteered to support the work of STH and University of Sheffield researchers. The Nation Institute for Health and Research (NIHR) states that PPI is an important part of the research that they fund as well as being part of their research commissioning and management processes. We expect researchers to actively involve the public in their research. NIHR also involve members of the public in reviewing funding applications and as members of decision-making committees and panels, making recommendations about research funding The panel meet regularly to review proposals that have been presented by investigators. Investigators can range from Consultants, Research Fellows or to Medical Students. The primary aim of the panel is to ensure that studies are feasible and that protocols are suitable and manageable for patients. The panel will advise researchers on information to give to patients and how to explain complicated research procedures in lay language. As research studies are successfully completed, the panel can also help write up the findings of studies so they can be disseminated to patients and the public. The panel meet regularly at the Northern General Hospital with additional meetings scheduled to support researchers wherever possible.
