  • Consultant Thoracic Surgeon

Thoracic Surgery

Specialist Clinical Interests

Clinical interests include all forms of surgery for lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, thoracic trauma, chest wall deformities (Nuss, Ravitch, Schulz-Drost Elastic Stable Repair), lung volume reduction (VATS and Endobronchial), endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy.

Research Interests

I have a major research interest in mesothelioma, covering basic science research as well as surgical and oncological management. I perform regularly Extended Pleurectomy/Decortication and VATS Partial Pleurectomy. I am committed to trials of surgery for mesothelioma and receive referrals from all parts of the UK. I am passionate about the access of patients and carers to appropriate information and advice about treatment choices.

With my colleagues in Sheffield, we have led the introduction of fixation of rib fractures in the UK. I am supported by the Sheffield Clinical Research Academy, hosted by ScHARR, in collaborations with colleagues, both in the UK and internationally, to refine indications for and the techniques of surgical fixation. The Sheffield Multiple Rib Fractures Study (SMuRFS) is ongoing.

Sheffield is the leading recruiter for the PulMICC trial and a lead surgical centre for the MARS-2 trial.

Further funded research interests include quality of life in patients with early stage lung cancer, chest wall pain and chest drain systems.

Current Trials: PulMiCC, ReSoLuCENT, LungART, HSV-1716, PIT, MARS-2, MesobanK, DIAPHRAGM, SMuRFS, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Cohort Studies, SMuRFS
Future Trials: MesoTRAP, , SMuRFIT, MIST-3, ADELE
