Occupational Therapy
Accidents, illness and ageing can turn everyday activities into challenges which can reduce independence and an individual's social and psychological well-being.
Occupational Therapists recognise that being able to perform these activities is crucial to returning back into the community.
Occupational therapists:
Work with people of all ages and backgrounds who are affected by accidents, physical or mental illness, disability or ageing.
- Provide help and training in daily activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, working and learning
- Offer advice on adapting your home or workplace to meet your needs
- Assess and recommend equipment to support independence on leaving hospital.
As a provider of health care for local residents occupational therapists liaise closely with community services and agencies to ensure patients receive ongoing care after leaving hospital if needed and further admissions to hospital are prevented. As a Tertiary hospital with several regional specialties such as spinal injuries and neuro-medical conditions, occupational therapists have developed clinical expertise in the conservative management of complex/specialist conditions. They have a close working relationship with Consultants and share their enhanced skills and advice with Occupational Therapy colleagues in surrounding localities.
Occupational therapists have close working relationships with multidisciplinary team colleagues in the community so that appropriate patients can be referred onto other services and agencies in a timely way.
Occupational Therapists at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals work across Inpatient services at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital, The Northern General Hospital and Weston Park Hospital and run a number of Outpatient Services. Working closely with their colleagues within Therapy Services.
