Skills Teaching

The Procedural Skills (Northern Campus) and Simulation Suite (Royal Hallamshire Campus) environments are part of an STH/Strategic Health Authority funded development which took place through 2010/11

Simulation Suite

The Simulation Suite is based within the Medical Education Department on R Floor at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

The suite comprises of a large flexible teaching space, scrub room/small feedback room and a simulation/recording control room

Teaching Space

The teaching space has the capability to be utilised for a wide variety of simulation experiences. (Also see Control Room)

Team Work/Critical Incident Review

Simman - Management of sick patient training

Scrub Room

The scrub room is adjacent to the teaching space and may be used for scrubbing training or as a room for the provision of small group feedback.

Control Room

The control room has the capability to record DVD for feedback purposes. This is facilitated by 4 Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras and ceiling mounted microphone in the teaching space. There is also the ability to communicate between the control room and theatre facilitators via wireless headphones and head set microphones.

The display fed to the control room can also be remotely displayed in Seminar Room 1 for observation and commentary by larger groups.

The operation of Simman can be facilitated from the control room including the display of the vital signs monitor as picture in picture display on the DVD.

Procedural Skills

The Procedural Skills and Mock Theatre environments are part of an STH/Strategic Health Authority funded development which took place through 2010/11

Procedural Skills

The Procedural Skills Centre is based within the Medical Education Centre at the Northern General Hospital.

The centre comprises of a large wet-lab space, basic surgical skills practice room and storage with large fridge and freezer facilities. The main wet-lab has a full length practice bench for small skills work, a theatre scrub sink associated waste and sharps disposal facilities and STH intranet points

Simulation

The procedural skills centre contains equipment for a wide variety of simulation purposes:

Simbionix Simulators: We are fortunate to have the ability to support simulation training with the Simbionix Angio-Mentor, Lap-Mentor and Bronch Mentor. These are hi-fidelity simulation aids with haptic feedback supporting:

  • Vascular and Cardiac Angiography inc "Procedure" Software
  • Laparoscopic simulation for colorectal and gynaecology
  • Bronchoscopy and Upper and Lower GI endoscopy
