Glen Charlesworth – Medicines Management Technician (MMT) Co-ordinator

“I started my career as a Pharmacy Assistant working in stores which gave me a great insight into how terrible drug names can be! Three years later I had completed my BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science and embarked on a career as a pharmacy technician.

Having qualified, I became a rotational technician working in a variety of areas. This gave me the opportunity to apply some of the knowledge I had gained at college.

“I was lucky enough to secure a secondment to the local Primary Care Trust conducting various audits within GP surgeries and giving presentations on medicines management to nursing home staff.

“A year later I returned to the Trust to work as a MMT on the upper gastro-intestinal and hepatobiliary wards. I enjoy providing a pharmacy service at ward level and the interaction with patients this gives me.

“I have been fortunate enough to access part time study for a Diploma prior to undertaking a BSc in Professional and Practice Development at Sheffield Hallam University. The course has been developed specifically for pharmacy technicians and operating department practitioners to help develop their skills in preparation for more senior roles. The course covered valuable areas for my development which included management, pharmacotherapeutics and pharmacokinetics.

“I am now a MMT Co-ordinator and involved with staff training, writing procedures, appraisals, interviews, sickness monitoring and, more importantly, approving holidays."
