Referral Criteria

The clinical team includes a dedicated TB nursing team together with specialist consultants in infectious diseases, respiratory medicine and paediatrics (child care). The wider team also includes specialists in microbiology, radiology, pharmacy and public health. The TB nursing team is based at Manor Clinic in Sheffield but the nurses also work alongside the consultant in respiratory medicine at the Northern General Hospital out-patients department.

Patients diagnosed with TB will receive regular medical reviews through home visits and phone contact as well as appointments at dedicated hospital clinics until the treatment is successfully completed. Contacts of TB patients are investigated according to agreed protocols and treatment offered where appropriate for confirmed latent infection. In addition, patients referred under the new entrant TB screening pathway are seen in at the Northern General Hospital out-patients department.

Referral Process

TB is a notifiable disease and active (or suspected active) cases must be referred to specialist services without delay. Referral should be made either to the Department for Infectious Diseases at Royal Hallamshire Hospital or the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Northern General Hospital. In the case of children under 16 years, referral should be made to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Referrals from health care professionals for contact screening may be made to the TB nursing team via letter, fax or telephone. Patient self-referrals may be accepted.
