Improving patient care through research

We have a long tradition of research excellence and innovation, pioneering advances in medicine and care through close collaboration with the city’s leading universities, industry partners and our patients.

As one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts in the country, we are committed to providing our patients with opportunities to take part in life-changing research which has the potential to transform lives and further improve patient care.

Over the past few years we have:

  • Been designated as one of 20 NIHR Biomedical Centres to pioneer medical breakthroughs in the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of devastatingly progressive illnesses such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease, stroke and multiple sclerosis
  • Played a key role in the development of personalised medicine through the establishment of a new Yorkshire and Humber NHS Genomic Medicine Centre, a groundbreaking project looking at the genomes of patients with certain rare diseases and patients with certain cancers
  • Established academic directorates in partnership with the University of Sheffield, who will use their combined assets to strengthen the impact of research in clinical practice through their clinical and academic expertise
  • Set up a joint Clinical Research Office, in partnership with the University of Sheffield, to provide dedicated support and advice to researchers across the Trust and the University of Sheffield who are committed to making a difference to patient care through innovative projects and collaborations
  • Developed two state-of-the-art Clinical Research Facilities, funded by the National Institute for Health Research, enabling patients to access new treatments and technologies in our main hospital sites
  • Supported the spread and adoption of research and innovation across the Yorkshire and Humber through the development of the Yorkshire and Humber Academic health Science network, with is working with NHS partners, industry and leading universities to ensure new treatments and technologies reach the clinic quicker and faster
