Walking aid recycling scheme

We have launched a dedicated walking aid recycling scheme where unused or no longer needed walking frames, walking sticks and other walking aids can be recycled through a special recycling provider. Any returned items will be collected, thoroughly cleaned and checked so that they can be given to another patient who needs them.

We can accept metal items including:

  • Walking sticks
  • Wheeled frames
  • Rollators
  • Adult crutches
  • Small equipment, e.g. toilet frames

We cannot accept:

  • Wheelchairs
  • Personal equipment such as commodes
  • Wooden walking sticks

Where do I drop these items off?

Items returned for re-use or recycling should be placed in the big blue carts available at our designated walking aid drop-off locations. The bins are clearly marked with a ‘Return Recycle Reuse’ sticker.

If you are travelling by car to drop items off, please use the nearby drop-off bays/laybys to stop and quickly drop off items. Please remember to park mindfully and adhere to hospital signage when on site.

Opening Times

The bins are available for use 24/7 and will be emptied and checked regularly but you must be able to lift items safely into the bins yourself.

What happens if items are unusable?

We can make use of all items, regardless of condition, as defective items can also be recycled as scrap metal, saving carbon and improving patient safety by taking them out of circulation.
