Opportunities for young people

Thank you so much to everyone who gave feedback on our survey for young people aged 16-25 about the services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

We received 453 responses to our survey and also spoke to over 40 individuals via our focus groups and community visits.

We have analysed all the feedback and found that a lot of people have a good experience when they come to hospital.  Overall, the staff are kind and treat people well.  However a lot of people also felt that staff didn’t listen to them well, that they were worried about not knowing what to expect, and that the hospital can feel big and overwhelming.

You can click here for a summary or here for the full results and report that we have shared with our staff.

We have presented the feedback at meetings across the hospital to make sure staff know about your feedback so they can take actions to improve all our services, particularly for younger people.

Some of our planned actions include:

Encouraging all staff to take a training course which has been developed specifically to help staff support younger patients, and help them through the change from child to adult hospitals

Looking at where we can create separate rooms or areas for younger people or neurodiverse people to wait separately if they would like to

Piloting a new Personalised Care Planning sheet for younger patients to help people prepare for appointments and make sure staff listen to what matters to them

Making sure our resource packs for young people are available and accessible to young people

Get involved!

We have a few more ways you can get involved in shaping healthcare for young people at STH!

You can contact us about any of the opportunities at sth.engagement@nhs.net

Our Transition and Young People team are working on a Care Planning Sheet which people can complete before their appointments to make sure the staff listen to what is most important to them.

We would like to know what you think about this:

  • Would you use this before your appointments?
  • Would it be helpful?
  • How could we improve it?

We want to create a bank of digital stories from younger people to help staff to understand what it is like being a young person attending hospital.  If you would be interested in sharing your hospital experience, your transition from child to adult care, or if you would like more information, get in touch!

We are looking into starting up a ‘Youth Forum’ and would be interested to hear what you think.

We would like to know what you think about this:

- Would you be interested in joining a youth forum or patient participation group for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals?

 - Would you like the meetings to be in person or online?

- How often do you think the group should meet?
