Overseas and private patients

We are one of the largest NHS Teaching Trusts in the UK, with a national and international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research. Across our five hospitals and Community health services, we provide the vast majority of NHS treatments, ranging from maternity services to care of the elderly. We provide services to Sheffield and South Yorkshire but also specialist services to all parts of the UK.

Currently our private patient services are limited and so If you wish to be treated as a private patient please contact our Private Healthcare Team by telephone on 0114 226 6065 or e-mail sth.private-healthcare@nhs.net and we can make enquiries on your behalf.

Making an informed choice

Everyone considering private healthcare should have access to free, clear and simple information about hospitals and consultants to help inform their decisions about care providers and treatments.

Every trust is the country is expected to contribute to the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN), an independent, not-for-profit, Government-mandated organisation.

Four times a year we provide information to the PHIN on:

  • Performance of private healthcare facilities
  • Fees of consultants providing private services
  • Performance of consultants providing private services
  • General information about consultants practicing private healthcare.

To compare your private healthcare options, search for treatments or shortlist your choice of private healthcare providers visit www.phin.org.uk

The Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014 also requires private hospital operators to disclose information on benefits and incentive schemes received by referring clinicians.

At Sheffield Teaching Hospitals we work with our Consultants to ensure they can focus on high quality patient care, and are committed to complying with The Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014.

The Consultants who practise privately at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals hold substantive or honorary contracts with the Trust. They do not have a financial interest or shares in the service.

Overseas Visitors

The National Health Service provides healthcare free of charge for people who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom. When a person who is not ordinarily resident in the UK (an "overseas visitor") needs NHS treatment they will be subject to the National Health Service (Charges to Overseas Visitors) Regulations 2015 (the "Charging Regulations") and may incur a charge for treatment.

In accordance with the Charging Regulations the Trust has a legal obligation to make and recover charges for NHS treatment in relation to any person who is not ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom. This is not optional and no one in the Trust has the authority to waive these charges.
