By public transport
The Northern General Hospital is on the north side of the city about three miles from the city centre and is served by several bus routes.
The guide is available from Travel South Yorkshire on their website here or can can be obtained by calling Traveline on 01709 515151.
The hospital has a free bus that travels around the hospital site and can drop off patients near all main departments. The bus runs half hourly.
By car
The hospital can be accessed from both Barnsley Road (A6135) and Herries Road (A6102). If you are using SatNav the postcode for the hospital (Herries Road) is S5 7AT.

Please be aware that Parking Charge Notices are in operation within the hospital grounds. This is to ensure that ambulances and other emergency services have free access to the hospital at all times. To avoid being issued with a Parking Charge Notice please make sure that your car is parked in a designated parking space.
By bicycle

By ambulance or medicar
If you feel that you need an ambulance or Medicar to get to hospital please telephone the number on your appointment letter and speak to a member of staff.
Please note that this service is not available to all patients, only to those with a medical need.
Courtesy Bus
Once here, the Northern General Hospital site is serviced by a Courtesy Bus, which is provided jointly by the Trust and the League of Friends.
This free of charge service is designed to help anyone visiting the site with getting around the hospital grounds. The service is fully accessible to disabled travellers. Please ask the driver if you require help getting on the bus.

Help with your fares
Under the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme, if you are entitled to certain means tested benefits you may be able to get help with your train or bus fares or car mileage to the hospital.
For those individuals eligible for reimbursement under the scheme:
- Mileage will be reimbursed at a cost of 25p per mile
- Car parking fees will be reimbursed at full cost on production of the car parking receipt from the hospital car park
- Other acceptable forms of transport include bus and rail fare on production of the original receipt
- Patients are required to bring their up-to-date proof of benefit letter and the hospital attendance certificate

H1 Hospital Shuttle Bus Service
The H1 Hospital Shuttle Bus Service is a public bus service running between the Royal Hallamshire and the Northern General Hospitals. The service operates between 0600-1800, with buses leaving from both the bus turning circle (at the end of B road) at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and from the turning circle (outside the Clock Tower) at the Northern General Hospital.
The buses run regularly throughout the day (see timetable here) with the exception of Bank Holidays. There is no weekend service. The buses travel via Herries Road, Penistone Road, Netherthorpe Road, Western Bank and Glossop Road and will stop, by request, at any stop on the route. The fare for the full journey between the two hospitals is £2.00 and £1 for any part journey
