Sheffield Teaching Hospitals neuromuscular team hailed as Centre of Excellence

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust neuromuscular team are celebrating after having been officially recognised as a Centre of Clinical Excellence by Muscular Dystrophy UK.



The Sheffield neuromuscular team were praised for providing outstanding care, promoting best practice locally and nationally, and demonstrating their commitment to improving health and wellbeing for people living with muscle wasting and weakening conditions.

In total 24 neuromuscular centres across the UK, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, have been designated as a Centre of Clinical Excellence by Muscular Dystrophy UK. This is the second consecutive time the team have won the prestigious national accolade.

The Sheffield Neuromuscular Centre cares for patients from across the region and beyond, including South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Lincolnshire, and is run by a specialist team.

This specialist team consists of consultants, nurses, specialist physiotherapists, care advisors, speech and language therapists, and related specialist services such as respiratory, cardiology, orthopaedic, gastroenterology, metabolic bone medicine, interventional neuro radiology and neurosurgical team, orthotics and wheelchairs and seating care are several to mention.

For some disorders like myasthenia gravis, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), inflammatory myositis, the team offers a supra-regional referral service.

Dr Channa Hewamadduma, Lead Neuromuscular Consultant Neurologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield said: “It is a real honour to receive the Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Centre of Excellence award for the second consecutive time running in recognition of the ongoing care and support that we provide to adult patients in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Lincolnshire and beyond.

“Disability from these conditions is severe and continues to have a massive impact on the quality of people’s lives. The presentation of this award by Muscular Dystrophy UK is great and it provides recognition of the high-quality ongoing specialist support our multidisciplinary neuromuscular care team provide to people living with these challenging lifelong conditions.”

Rob Burley, Director of Care, Campaigns and Support at Muscular Dystrophy UK who presented the Muscular Dystrophy UK Centre of Excellence with Research award to the team, said: “It’s an honour to present Sheffield Teaching Hospitals with one of our Centre of Excellence awards. Congratulations to the neuromuscular experts and hospital staff that provide essential care and support to the muscle wasting and weakening community. At Muscular Dystrophy UK, we’ll continue to work with neuromuscular centres in Sheffield and services across the country and will be calling on commissioners to invest in the development of specialist multi-disciplinary teams that provide the best possible care.”
