A nurse caring for patients who suffer with rare cancer tumours that develop inside the womb during pregnancy has been commended by the Mariposa Trust for showing care and compassion above the call of duty for a patient who experienced baby loss.

Kam Singh, a Nurse Consultant at Weston Park Cancer Centre, is to be recognised with a ‘Compassion Award’ after being nominated by a patient she cared for and who sadly lost a baby.

Kam, who has worked at Weston Park Cancer Centre for 25 years, is one of only a handful of nurses across to the country to be shortlisted for the prestigious award which honours a healthcare professional who has gone above and beyond in showing compassion to women who have gone through the trauma of baby loss.

Kam has devoted her career to supporting patients undergoing cancer treatment beginning her career on a student placement at Weston Park in 1994, and later becoming the lead clinical nurse specialist at the Sheffield Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Centre. The centre is one of two specialist national centres in the UK providing care to women who suffer from gestational trophoblastic disease.

Speaking about her nomination, Kam said: “I feel very privileged to be nominated, it means a lot to be recognised for my work. The Gestational Trophoblastic disease team at Weston Park Cancer Centre is very fortunate to be able to provide patients with the support and care that goes above and beyond the standard practice. I have met some incredible patients in my 25 years of nursing, and to be able to make a difference in their journey is the reason I love coming to work every day. Patients are always at the heart of what we do.”

“My compassion and empathy for patients is the reason I went into nursing 25 years ago; I can honestly say I still enjoy nursing and it is also a massive personal achievement to have been appointed as a Nurse Consultant this year,” she added.

Professor Chris Morley, Chief Nurse, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Kam is a credit to the nursing profession and the Trust. So, I am delighted that she has not only been recognised by this award but also been successful in achieving her new role as a Nurse Consultant here at Weston Park Cancer Centre. She represents the values and professionalism we look for in our nurses and fully deserves this recognition.”

The event will take place at the Landmark Hotel in central London.
