Lord Mayor Unveils Artwork Donated by Local Artist to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals

A beautiful artwork by Sara Boccaccini Meadows, titled Mam Nick, which was donated to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, was unveiled at the Northern General Hospital on Monday 1st November. Lord Mayor Gail Smith unveiled the artwork, which will be permanently displayed at the main entrance of the Hand Centre, at the Northern General Hospital.

The artwork depicts a well-known local landmark, and was created by Sara Boccaccini Meadows, who is a local artist, now working and living in New York. The artist said that the work was “painted during the first Covid-19 lockdown in the spring of 2020, Mam Nick is a celebration of the beauty and biodiversity of the UK's northern landscape.” Sara held an exhibition in her hometown of Sheffield in 2020, at the end of which she wanted to donate some of her artwork to the NHS.

The unveiling was attended by Lord Mayor, Gail Smith, who worked with some of the Hand Centre colleagues in the plastic surgery team between 2001 to 2008 as a support worker. Gail Smith said: “I’ve known some of the people who work here at the Hand Centre for a long time and so it’s a pleasure to be able to attend this unveiling of the incredible artwork donated by Sara Boccaccini Meadows”.

Maria Gosling, Senior Sister at the Hand Centre, said: “The Hand Centre team and I feel privileged to have received an original piece of artwork by a local artist and are delighted that Sara has become part of the Hand Centre journey. The care Sara has put into the painting I hope reflects the care we give to our patients. It was a pleasure to meet Sara's family today who joined us for the unveiling. The piece brightens up the entrance to the unit.”

Framing and installation of this piece was coordinated by the Arts in Health Team, and kindly funded by supporters of the Sheffield Hospitals Charity. https://www.sheffieldhospitalscharity.org.uk/Appeal/art
