New Non Executive Directors appointed at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Two new Non Executive Directors have been appointed to the Board of Directors at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Toni Schwarz and Maggie Porteous join the Trust for a four-year term from 1 May.

Dr Schwarz has had a 35 year career working within the health sector and the NHS, and is the Dean of the College of Health Wellbeing and Life Sciences at Sheffield Hallam University. This role as a Sheffield Hallam University nominated Non Executive is the second such role on the Board of Directors. The other is held by the University of Sheffield.

Dr Schwarz trained as a nurse and worked in clinical practice in hospital and the community for almost 20 years before moving into higher education. She moved to Sheffield in 2014 to take up the role of Head of Department for Nursing and Midwifery at Sheffield Hallam before stepping up to her current role.

She said: “I am very excited about the prospect of engaging more deeply with an organisation that I already work closely with. I hope my level of knowledge, experience and leadership will support the Trust to continue to achieve the very best it can for patients and local communities it serves.”

Maggie Porteous brings more than 30 years of business experience working for John Lewis, where she was Director of Shop Trade until 2020 and responsible for the leadership of 51 John Lewis shops.
She is also Chair of the John Lewis Foundation, working with a wide variety of non-governmental organisations and charities on international and UK projects, and a non executive Director of Silva Homes, a not for profit social housing association.

She said: “After 31 happy years working in a wonderful business, I decided the time was right for me to use the skills and experience I have in new ways, working in different organisations.

“I have experienced the services of the Trust over the last two years while supporting my 80 year old mother. I am acutely aware of the difference that the Trust can make in supporting local people to stay as well as possible to the end of their lives. I feel privileged to be able to make a positive contribution in this role at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.”

Non Executive Directors help to shape the Trust’s strategic direction, act as ambassadors and provide advice and support to the Executive Team.

Annette Laban, Chair of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am delighted to welcome Toni and Maggie to the Trust. Their extensive experience and expertise in health, business and education will be invaluable in helping us to continue providing and developing high-quality services for the people of Sheffield and beyond as we emerge from the unprecedented challenges of the last year. Toni’s appointment will also cement an important relationship for us in the city with Sheffield Hallam University.”
