First pharmacies in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to offer Covid-19 vaccines from this week

The first three pharmacies in Sheffield and South Yorkshire are to begin offering the Covid-19 vaccine this week as part of the national NHS Covid-19 vaccination programme.

Wicker Pharmacy, Page Hall Pharmacy and Superdrug Barnsley will offer the life-saving jabs from Thursday 13 May (Wicker and Page Hall) and from Saturday 15 May (Superdrug Barnsley), with more pharmacies to follow in the next few weeks.

The pharmacies taking part in the vaccination programme will come up as options when a person books their Covid-19 vaccination through the national booking system or when calling 119. They will be seen alongside Sheffield Arena as a choice of where to have the vaccination. A number of primary care centres across the region are also still calling people forward for vaccinations by phone or text message.

Anyone aged 40 or over living in the region can book to have their jab at the local pharmacies as of today via the national NHS Covid-19 vaccine booking system (Book a coronavirus vaccination - NHS (www.nhs.uk) or by calling free on 119. People are being asked not to just turn up without an appointment as pharmacy staff will not be able to give the jab. Also please do not phone the pharmacies direct as they cannot make appointments for you.

Kirsten Major, Chief Executive for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Covid-19 vaccine programme in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw has been hugely successful so far, with over 1.1 million first and second doses already given. We want to ensure this success continues, and so we are delighted that the first three local community pharmacies are now on board as this will provide another option for people to get their vaccination. We urge anyone aged 40 or over to book their first dose of the vaccine as soon as they are able. It’s also important that you come back for your 2nd dose of the vaccine to ensure you get full protection. We have appointments available to book at Sheffield Arena and the pharmacies, so make sure you book online or by calling 119 as soon as possible.”

Ellie Bennett, Managing Director, Wicker Pharmacy, said: “Pharmacists sit at the heart of the community, so we are delighted to be using our expertise to help deliver the national NHS coronavirus vaccination programme.”

Suhaib Abdullah Director of Page Hall Pharmacy and Allied Pharmacies Group said: “We are extremely proud to be working alongside the NHS and participating in the national effort to support the roll-out of the Covid-19 vaccine. Pharmacists are trusted healthcare professionals and our pharmacies are a vital part of the community, providing patients greater choice and flexibility as to where they can have their life-saving vaccination.”

Michael Henry, Superdrug’s Healthcare Director said: “We are proud to be working with the NHS and welcome the opportunity for more of our front-line clinical teams, together with other community pharmacy teams, to play an even greater role in delivering the vaccination service to more patients more quickly.”
