Sheffield Teaching Hospitals wins NHS Procurement Heroes Award for response to COVID-19

The Procurement and Logistics Team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have been announced as the winner of the NHS Procurement Heroes Award at the NHS in the North Excellence in supply during COVID-19 Awards.

This award recognises the exceptional support the team provided to the hospital and community staff during COVID-19 to keep patients and staff safe.

Throughout the pandemic the team redesigned their systems and processes to provide an exemplary service, ensuring patients and staff across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and community services had the PPE and other critical supplies they needed to care for patients. They worked 7 days a week, procuring on behalf of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICS to ensure that all hospitals in the area had required levels of stock. This included sourcing over 52 million items of PPE and delivering over 16.5 million items of PPE within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals alone.

The award was announced by Richard Deed, Associate Director of Industry, Health Innovation Manchester during a live stream on YouTube and Twitter. He said,

“Our judges said that the quality of applications in this category was outstanding, with spectacular outcomes and impacts described in all submissions, but the procurement team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals clearly went above and beyond, moving quickly to a seven day week service, coordinating a new team of 35 volunteers and overcoming huge logistics difficulties.”

Director of Procurement, Andrea Smith, wanted to thank the team for their outstanding contribution during this time.

She said "Winning this award is testament to the Procurement and Logistics teams hard work and commitment to keeping our patients and staff safe. They have shown outstanding dedication and have excelled in adapting processes to provide enough PPE for the Trust and surrounding areas. Each individual, including the entire team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, has worked together to step up to the challenge and I am incredibly proud of the work they have done.”

The NHS in the North Excellence in Supply awards celebrate inspirational examples of businesses, third sector organisations and the NHS working together to improve patient care and support health and care staff during COVID-19.
