Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to lead pioneering first national eye cancer conference

Leading eye cancer experts from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are to host the first ever UK national eye cancer conference.

Around 250 eye doctors from across the UK are expected to gather at the two-day conference at the Mercure Hotel in Sheffield between the 18th and 19th November.

The 1st Ocular Oncology Conference will bring together leading national eye cancer experts from all major centres including those from Sheffield Ocular Oncology Service.

The conference will highlight ways in which diagnosis, investigation and clinical management of every patient with any type of eye cancer can be improved.

The Sheffield Ocular Oncology Service at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals was established 32 years ago by Professor Ian Rennie, who has been a pioneering influence in advancing management and practice for eye cancer care throughout the world. It is one of three national eye cancer services in England and the only centre to treat all types of adult eye cancers under one roof. Mr Paul Rundle is the clinical lead and Mr Sachin Salvi is the MDT and research lead for the service.

In Professor Rennie’s honour, the Eponymous Ian Rennie Medal lecture is to be delivered by Professor Arun Singh, a former consultant at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, who is travelling from Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA as an invited keynote speaker.

Mr Sachin Salvi, who conceptualised the meeting and is the Conference Director said: “We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural UK ocular oncology conference in Sheffield. The conference will, for the first time ever, give eye doctors across the UK, clear guidance on how to diagnose and care for patients with any cancer in and around the eye. We have been at the forefront of best practice in the field for a number of years and we hope that by disseminating recent advances in practice we can share our local and national expertise with colleagues across the country. This in turn will further improve patient and benefit patients in UK and beyond.”
