Laundry manager nominated for national Health Hero award

The manager of a hospital laundry service has been nominated as a Health Hero.

Reg Ramsden, Laundry and Linen Services Manager for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is a national finalist in the Operational Services Support Worker category of the Our Health Heroes Awards after he was chosen as a regional winner.

Reg is responsible for running the Trust’s laundry, providing services for the Royal Hallamshire, Northern General, Weston Park, Charles Clifford and Jessop Wing hospitals, along with community services. As well as this, the laundry provides linen to Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

This equates to 135,000-150,000 items of laundry per week and around 6.5 - 7m items per year. This is a vital service for the Trust and its patients and staff.

In his nomination he was particularly praised for the support given in helping young adults with physical and learning disabilities and autism gain internship placements to give them confidence and life and work experience.

Reg said: “It was an honour to be nominated, but it is really more about recognition for all the linen services staff who do so much good work. I am just here to give them the tools, environment and support to enable them to provide an essential service for the care of our patients.”

Facilities Director Andrew Jones said: “Reg leads our in house laundry team of which we are immensely proud. They provide linen across the whole of the city both for our hospitals and community facilities and help ensure a great patient experience. Reg thoroughly deserves the recognition both as an individual and a leader of a service which goes the extra mile for our patients.”

The Our Health Heroes Awards celebrate the thousands people who work in health and are the backbone of the sector.

The national winners will be decided by a public vote. To vote for Reg, visit https://www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/ohh-2019/operational-services-support-worker-of-the-year-2019.
