Leading heart experts from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation are to host one of the most prestigious annual cardiology meetings next week.

Over 150 cardiac catheter laboratory specialists from across the country, including nurses, radiographers and cardiac physiologists, are to convene at the British Cardiac Intervention Society Allied Health Professionals Summer Meeting at Cutler’s Hall on the 24 and 25 June.

The two-day event will showcase the wide range of cutting-edge techniques and procedures provided at the South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre based at the Northern General Hospital.

This includes specialised imaging and techniques in complex coronary angioplasty procedures where balloon catheters and stents are used to open narrowed or blocked arteries supplying the heart. In addition there will be special sessions dedicated to the latest techniques in the treatment of heart attacks as well the deployment of new artificial aortic heart valves (TAVI) under local anaesthetic.

The South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre is one of the largest in the country treating patients from across the South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire areas. Patients benefit from five state-of-the-art cardiac catheterisation laboratories, advanced diagnostic equipment such as treadmill exercise testing and echocardiology, a 12-bedded cardiac intensive care unit and an eight-bedded coronary care unit.

The British Cardiac Intervention Society Allied Health Professionals Summer Meeting will be led by a team of senior cardiology specialists, nurses, radiographers and cardiac physiologists and Dr Ever Grech, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) Lead at Sheffield Teaching NHS Foundation Trust.

Dr Grech said: “Sheffield is home to one of the leading cardiology centres in the UK, and we are honoured to be hosting this prestigious event for the first time. This meeting will be a fantastic opportunity for experts from Sheffield and across the UK to share their experience and knowledge on a wide spectrum of contemporary interventional cardiology practice.”

British Cardiac Intervention Society Allied Health Professionals Summer Meeting has been brought to Sheffield thanks to Matron Ann Matto, staff nurse Paul Cattell, cardiophysiologist James Battye, superintendent radiographer James Heppenstall and sister Eileen Quinn at the South Yorkshire Cardiothoracic Centre.
