Community Nurse awarded title of Queen’s Nurse for dedication to patient care

A dedicated Sheffield community nurse has been awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse (QN) by community nursing charity The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) in recognition of high standards of care.

Rebekah Matthews, Integrated Pathway Manager at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has given twenty five years of service to the NHS and will attend a ceremony in London on 21st June to collect her award.

Rebekah qualified as a nurse in Leeds in 1994, and after enjoying placements in the community, knew that was where she would pursue her career. She gained a District Nurse Specialist Practitioner qualification in Manchester in 1999 and was involved with managing the community nursing relief team, the Evening Nursing Service, the leg ulcer service and setting up the rapid response nursing service.

Rebekah returned to her home town of Sheffield in 2003, where she is now a manager of community nursing and therapy services.

The title of Queen’s Nurse indicates a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership. Nurses who hold the title benefit from developmental workshops, bursaries, networking opportunities, and a shared professional identity.

Rebekah said: “Receiving the title of Queen’s Nurse means so much to me, after 25 years of working in the community I am still as passionate about community nursing and committed to the provision of the highest quality of innovative, patient centred care.”

“I am really looking forward to the opportunities that will come with joining the network of Queen’s Nurses, and the links to other Queen’s Nurses with the same values and commitments as me.”

The award is open to nurses with more than five years’ experience working in the community. Managers and patients provide feedback about applicants, which is assessed along with their application.

Chris Morley, Chief Nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: “I am delighted that Rebekah has been awarded the Queens Nurse title which is one of the highest accolades that can be bestowed upon a community nurse. Rebekah is a fantastic ambassador for person centred care and caring for people safely in their own homes and we are very fortunate to have her working with us here at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.”
