Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust appoints new Medical Director


Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Dr David Hughes as its new Medical Director following the announcement in October that long standing Medical Director Dr David Throssell will retire at the end of January.

Dr Hughes who is a nationally renowned Consultant Histopathologist has been Deputy Medical Director at the Trust since 2013 and prior to this he was Associate Medical Director for Cancer for many years. David began his Consultant career in 1998 before moving to STH in 2005.

Dr Hughes is a specialist sarcoma pathologist who trained in Sheffield, Edinburgh and San Antonio, Texas and has worked as a consultant in the sarcoma teams at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital as well as Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

Kirsten Major, Interim Chief Executive, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “I am delighted that we have appointed someone of David’s high calibre to be our new Medical Director. His contributions to the Trust as both Associate Medical Director for Cancer and Deputy Medical Director have been significant and he is a highly respected clinician not just within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals but nationally and internationally. David’s values, leadership qualities and experience will not only ensure we continue to have a strong focus on delivering safe, high quality, patient care, but also that we seek out opportunities to work with partners, to innovate, collaborate and exploit the opportunities ahead for our patients, staff, Sheffield region and the wider NHS.”

Dr Hughes said he was delighted to have been appointed and said: “I am very proud to work for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and it is a great honour and privilege to be appointed Medical Director. I am very much looking forward to working with the great team of people we have across the organisation to provide our patients with excellent care.”

Dr Hughes will take up post from the 1st February 2019.
