Community Nurse becomes a Queen’s Nurse in recognition of high standards of care

A dedicated Sheffield community nurse has achieved one of the highest accolades in her profession by being awarded the title of Queen’s Nurse (QN) by community nursing charity The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI).

Helen Chapman, Head of Integrated Community Care at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has given nearly three decades of service to the NHS and will attend a ceremony in London on 25 June to collect her award.

Helen qualified as a district nurse in 1990 and spent more than 16 years in clinical practice working in south west Sheffield before progressing into leadership roles.

The title of Queen’s Nurse indicates a commitment to high standards of patient care, learning and leadership. Nurses who hold the title benefit from developmental workshops, bursaries, networking opportunities, and a shared professional identity.

Helen said: “Receiving this award means a lot to me. After 28 years in the role I am still as passionate as ever about the profession, and our role in delivering person centred care to patients in their own homes.

“I am proud of the achievements of the community nursing service in Sheffield and will continue to be an advocate for high quality patient care delivered by dedicated community teams.

“I also welcome the wider opportunities to influence that this award will bring.”

The award is open to nurses with more than five years’ experience working in the community. Managers and patients provide feedback about applicants, which is assessed along with their application.

Dame Hilary Chapman, Chief Nurse at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, said: “This is one of the highest accolades that can be bestowed upon a community nurse, and is recognition of Helen’s personal commitment to high standards of care, leadership and education and learning.

“I am very proud to have Helen in our organisation and our profession.”

Dr Crystal Oldman CBE, Chief Executive of the QNI, said: “On behalf of the QNI I would like to congratulate Helen and welcome her as a Queen’s Nurse.

“Queen’s Nurses serve as leaders and role models in community nursing, delivering high quality health care across the country. The application and assessment process to become a Queen’s Nurse is rigorous and requires clear commitment to improving care for patients, their families and carers.”
