Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's reputation as a leading provider of high-quality orthopaedic surgery has been boosted with the award of gold level status in the National Joint Registry (NJR) Quality Data Provider Awards 2025.

The NJR is an internationally respected registry which collects data on hip, knee, ankle, elbow and shoulder joint replacement surgeries across the UK, tracking information on patient outcomes, the procedure undertaken and the specific implant used to improve the quality and safety of care.
The data is used nationally to identify best practice, reduce revision surgeries, and support clinical decision-making. It also acts as an important source of evidence for regulators, such as the Care Quality Commission (CQC), to inform their judgements about the quality of health services.
This is the third consecutive year both the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals have achieved the ‘exemplary’ status Under the ‘NJR Quality Data Provider’ award scheme, hospitals can achieve gold, silver or bronze status for reaching patient safety standards and targets. Achieving gold status requires hospitals to meet rigorous audit and compliance standards of data submitted to the NJR.
Mr Amjid Ali, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Director of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Care Group at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are incredibly proud to achieve gold level NJR status for the third consecutive year. This award acknowledges the vital contribution of our MSK clinical and audit teams in improving patient care and strengthens our reputation as a leading provider of orthopaedic surgery. The registry benchmarks performance against national outcomes, helping surgeons and implant manufacturers identify areas for improvement, whilst also acting as an early warning of issues relating to patient safety with the aim of improving clinical standards. This ongoing success is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our theatre and orthopaedic teams, whose commitment to accurate, compliant data underpins a strong culture of patient safety and excellence in care.”
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recognised nationally as a centre of excellence for orthopaedic care. A new state-of-the-art surgical centre, offering more timely care for those waiting for orthopaedic procedures, also opened in spring 2023.
