Biomedical Science Day 2024

Biomedical scientists and laboratory staff play a key role in patient care, testing and analysing over 1.5 billion samples in the UK a year.

To mark #BiomedicalScienceDay we’re thanking and raising awareness of the pivotal role our fantastic biomedical science teams play in healthcare – from determining the blood requirements of critically ill patients to identifying outbreaks of infectious diseases to monitoring biomarkers in cancer.

Across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw region, we have over 1,000 staff from apprentices to consultant scientists providing a comprehensive range of testing, research, training and leading quality advisory services.

At Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, our biomedical science teams have worked together to gain accreditation for immunology graduate training, commission training for clinical pharmaceutical science at both Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and support the development of higher postgraduate training for haematologists, alongside traditional biomedical science routes.

Sheffield Laboratories is also home to parts of UK NEQAS which fulfils an important role in providing quality assurance for laboratories across the country and internationally.

Thank you to all biomedical scientists, clinical scientists, allied health professionals, lab support, apprenticeships, registrars, pathologists, administrative teams, and everyone who works #attheheartofhealthcare. 💙
