Sheffield Teaching Hospitals given a Stonewall gold award for being a leading LGBTQ+ inclusive employer

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has received an accolade for its inclusion of lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer people in the workplace.

The Trust has been ranked as one of Stonewall’s top 100 employers, achieving a gold award which recognises its commitment to supporting their LGBTQ+ staff and patients.

The Trust was praised in particular for its work creating a workplace where LGBTQ+ employees can bring their full selves to work.

Kirsten Major, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “To be ranked as one of the Top 100 organisations across England & Wales is a phenomenal achievement and is the result of a lot of hard work and commitment to inclusion.

“We are proud of our diverse workforce of more than 18,500 staff. Only by being a diverse and inclusive workforce can we appropriately meet the needs of our diverse patient population. The work of our LGBTQ+ PROUDER staff network and our teams and services across the organisation is all helping to create a culture where staff feel supported and are encouraged to be themselves with their colleagues and our patients.

“We want everyone to have a voice, to feel they belong and to be equally valued and important- valued staff are happier staff and that contributes to providing the best care for our patients.”

Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers List 2023 is the UK’s leading ranking of employers from public, private and third sectors on how inclusive their workplaces are.

Nancy Kelley, CEO of Stonewall said: “It’s been fantastic to see all of the work put in by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals over the past year to create a workplace where LGBTQ+ staff feel free to thrive as themselves.

“For many of us, the majority of our time is spent at work, so if we have to hide who we are it can take an enormous personal toll and hold us back from fulfilling our true potential. Creating environments where we can all feel comfortable makes our workplaces a safer, better and friendlier place for everyone and helps staff be proud of who they are.”

Stonewall is the UK’s leading charity for lesbian, gay, bi and trans equality, working to create a world where every lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer person is free to be themselves – wherever they are.
