Head of podiatry services, Professor Wesley Vernon OBE, has retired from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust after 35 years’ service to the NHS.
Professor Vernon’s career first started in Derbyshire in 1980 before moving to Sheffield in 1985 where his outstanding national and international reputation as a leader in podiatry grew.
A great asset to health services in Sheffield, under his leadership, Sheffield’s expert team of Podiatrists have won the prestigious Customer Service Excellence Standard for the last 18 years consecutively.
Sir Andrew Cash, chief executive, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It has been fantastic to have Professor Vernon as a colleague – he has been a truly valued member of the Sheffield health community for many years.
“Thanks to his hard work, commitment and expertise, the Sheffield Podiatry Service is a nationally recognised service which we are proud to offer to patients across the city and beyond.
“I know Wesley will be missed by all his colleagues here and I would like to both thank him and wish him all the very best for the future.”
Alongside leading a renowned local service, Professor Vernon has achieved national and international acclaim for his pioneering work in forensic podiatry – co-authoring the first textbook on forensic podiatry and developing and leading a unique forensic podiatry unit which undertakes both national and international case work.

On his retirement, Professor Vernon said: “Since I qualified in 1980, I have seen many changes in the role and practice of the care professions and throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have been able to contribute to a number of developments in my own field.
“Any success I may have achieved in these endeavours would not have been possible without the tremendous support that I have always received from friends, colleagues and senior managers.
“I have been privileged to have been able to work with many caring, dedicated and forward thinking people and I think that together, we have been able make a small but positive contribution to both the development of the podiatry profession and health care in general.”
