Patient inspectors give Sheffield Hospitals top marks for cleanliness, dignity and food standards

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has received positive feedback for ward cleanliness, environment, respecting patient's dignity and the quality of food from independent inspectors as part of a national assessment to ensure high standards are met.

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was assessed by the Patient Led-Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE) which gives staff and patients the opportunity to be inspectors in a bid to drive improvements in care settings. Results are published today for the annual patient-led assessments of non-clinical services, such as catering services, changing and waiting facilities, signage, lighting and the condition and appearance of fixtures and fittings.

The inspectors looked at four areas within the Trust which were scored out of 100%.The Northern General, Royal Hallamshire (which includes the Jessop Wing), Weston Park Hospitals and Beech Hill Intermediate Care Unit. The overall scores for the Trust were 99% for cleanliness, over 86% for patient privacy, dignity and wellbeing, over 85% for condition, appearance and maintenance of the buildings and over 88% for food.

Kevin O’Regan, Hotel Services Director, at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation said, “We are pleased to receive another great set of results from the Patient Led Assessment. These assessments are a great way to empower our patients and they have once again shown their satisfaction in the service they receive from us. Our staff have worked very hard this year to deliver good standards across our four key domains”.

Patient-Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) is now in its third year. The report provides the results of assessments of healthcare premises within the NHS and independent sectors in England made by teams which comprise at least 50 per cent patients.
