Sheffield Hospitals named as one of country's top 40 hospitals

Trust independently assessed as delivering high quality, safe and efficient care

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been named as one of the country’s top 40 hospitals by an international firm of healthcare consultants who independently assess high quality, safe and efficient care from performance data provided.

The Comparative Health Knowledge Systems (CHKS) Top 40, which is not ranked in any particular order, is the only data-driven assessed healthcare award for NHS Trusts in the country.

The accolade celebrates the achievements of the country's hospitals based on 22 clinical targets. These include length of hospital stays, mortality rates, access to surgery, availability of treatment to elderly and staff job satisfaction.

The data takes account of different medical conditions, complexity and the different circumstances individual Trusts have to manage.

More than 100 NHS Trusts in the country, or about a third of the total in the UK, were assessed, with only 40 selected as 'high achievers'.

Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We're delighted to have been named as one of the country’s top 40 hospitals in these prestigious awards. To be independently judged as well managed and high achieving is a great tribute to our staff, who have continued to provide compassionate, high quality care to our patients in an exceptionally busy year.”

This is the third consecutive year the Trust has won the accolade, which it also scooped in 2011.

Jason Harries, Managing Director, CHKS said: “These awards recognise outstanding performance in those areas which we believe are critical to delivering good patient care. We are delighted that Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of our Top Hospitals 2015.”

The award was presented to the Trust at a ceremony in London on the 19 May.
