Workshops aim to develop service improvement ideas

Clinical Leads and senior staff from across the Laboratory Medicine directorate have taken part in innovative business strategy workshops to help them develop and collaborate on service improvement ideas.

Laboratory Medicine worked with Strategy and Planning to organise workshops in February and May which looked at how to develop responsive, patient-centred and cost effective diagnostic services by working across service boundaries.

The workshops brought together clinical and non-clinical staff and used the Business Model Canvas method, which is tried and tested in the commercial sector, to develop real service improvement ideas. It covered key areas including finance, business strategy, online training and performance management.

Dr Branko Perunovic, Clinical Director for Laboratory Medicine, said: “We have competent, enthusiastic and creative staff with brilliant ideas. This workshop was about acquiring knowledge, a shared language and practical tools to evaluate these ideas, assess their potential and make focussed decisions about how to deploy and focus our resources.

“Our aim was to create an innovation and improvement forum for bringing together clinicians and managers from all laboratory disciplines to think together and collaborate on developments across the traditional service boundaries.”

Louise Dunk, Directorate manager, said: “Ultimately, our aim is to enable our clinical users to manage patients in the most effective ways. The skills acquired in this workshop will be invaluable on our journey to further advance effective, patient-centric laboratory diagnostics.”

The business strategy workshops were part of the wider Leadership Development Programme for Clinical Leads and Lead Managers of the Laboratory Medicine Directorate, which also included an Insights Discovery Workshop facilitated by Learning & Development, a NHS Finance Skills Development online course and a Key Skills Training Day covering finances, business planning, contracting, HR and performance management.
