A consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has been elected as the President of the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP).
Professor John Tidy will be in the post for the next three years, after being elected at the society’s annual meeting which was attended by 550 delegates.
He said: “I am delighted and honoured to take on the role of President of the BSCCP for the next three years. The BSCCP has pioneered high quality training and education, in the UK, to help provide the highest quality of care to women who have an abnormal cervical screening test. I hope to continue to develop our training programme and liaise with the NHS to develop best practice.”
Professor Tidy has been affiliated to the BSCCP for many years, and helped develop its General Medical Council approved training curriculum, which must be completed by all NHS colposcopists.
He has also written and edited national guidance documents and currently chairs the National Professional Advisory Group on Colposcopy on behalf of the English NHS Cervical Cancer Screening Programme (NHSCSP). Colposcopy is a procedure for identifying abnormal cells in the cervix. In his role at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Professor Tidy has played a key part in evaluating changes to the screening programme.
The BSCCP was founded in 1972 to help improve the care of women with abnormal cervical screening tests, and has more than 2400 members.
It awards training and overseas research grants, and will this year provide £20,000 to help establish colposcopy services in Brazil, Ghana and Nepal. It also helps to train colposcopists in Eastern Europe.
