A LEADING urological surgeon is to put Sheffield’s name on the global map when he becomes the new Editor-in Chief of an internationally recognised scientific journal.
Dr James Catto, who works for the Academic Urology Unit at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital which is run by the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield, will take up the reins at European Urology on 1 January, 2014. The journal is published by Elsevier on behalf of the European Association of Urology (EAU).
The publication – which is read by over 20,000 experts working in the field – plays a pivotal role in helping specialists find out the latest findings and research which will enable them to deal with some diseases associated with urological conditions in the UK. These include prostate cancer, kidney damage and incontinence – all of which can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Dr James Catto, a consultant urological surgeon for Sheffield Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Sheffield, said: “I’m enormously privileged to have been appointed to this prestigious post.
“Sheffield has been a centre for urological research since it was established in1999, and the department has helped raise over £40 million to fund vital research which aims to improve the diagnosis, care and treatment of thousands of patients who suffer from distressing and sometimes life-threatening conditions related to the urinary tract.
“My appointment will be critical in drawing further attention to the fantastic work of Sheffield’s urological departments at both local and international level. Ultimately this should help us pioneer even more life-changing research.”
Urology is the management and treatment of diseases of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, bladder, uretha and prostate.
