Hospital volunteer to step down after helping patients for more than three decades

A volunteer who has worked tirelessly to improve the care of patients at the Northern General Hospital is retiring from his role after more than 30 years.

Graham Gillott is leaving the Northern General Hospital‘s League of Friends since becoming its chairman in 1978.

Over the years, Graham has supported and promoted the development of the League of Friends both locally and nationally and overseen many projects that have helped patients.

These include a bus to help patients and visitors get around the Northern General Hospital, providing art and other therapies on Palliative Care and Spinal Injuries wards and most recently an electronic patient feedback scheme which allows the hospital to find out patient views and make improvements to services.

Graham, 72, of Millhouses, said he was very proud of the good work the group had done over the years.

He said: “The League provides a key link between the community and the hospital and I’m very proud of the worthwhile work it continues to do.

The League of Friends and the hospital are full of really committed people, who just want to give patients the best possible care, I’m glad I could be part of the team.”

Sir Andrew Cash, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said everyone at the hospital was extremely grateful for the good work Graham had done over the years.

He said: “Graham will be sadly missed by all the volunteers and staff who have had the pleasure of working with him over the years. His dedication and commitment to the League of Friends and our hospitals make him a very hard act to follow.

“I would like to thank Graham for his many years of unstinting commitment which has brought so many benefits to patients and staff. We wish Graham and his family all the very best.”
