Neurology Memory Service & South Yorkshire Brain Health Clinic

The Neurology Memory Service is an integrated clinical and research clinic. We provide a comprehensive assessment of patients with cognitive neurological problems to enable an early diagnosis of the diseases that cause dementia . We are forward looking, preparing clinical services for the 21st century.

As well as receiving high-quality assessments, everyone who attends the clinic is given the opportunity to take part in research to help improve the diagnosis and treatments available for people with memory problems.

The Main aims of Neurology Memory Service & South Yorkshire Brain Health Clinic are:

  • To support patients and carers through the assessment and diagnostic process
  • To provide information to patients and sign post them to support services across the health and social care boundaries in the city
Referral Criteria

Under 65 years of age with cognitive problems. We do see older adults referred from older adults psychiatry and neurology clinics with more complex needs.

More complex cases or where diagnostic uncertainty exists are referred for detailed neuropsychology or cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers if Alzheimer’s is suspected. This is supported by a team of experienced neuropsychologists with clinical expertise and an interest in research.

Research

The memory services department is a research active zone and we can help you get involved in research opportunities.

Our patients can take part in research by consenting to various on-going diagnostic and treatment studies. The clinic recruits to commercial phase 1,2 & 3 studies testing new medications to treat Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as studies that help researchers understand the cause and progression of disease.

The person accompanying the patient to their appointment can also choose to take part in research.

If you would like to take part, please ask your doctor for further information or visit the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) website to find out more. You can also email getinvolved@nhs.net, call 0114 226 5935 or visit www.sth.nhs.uk/research-innovation and click get involved.
