Neurology Memory
Comprehensive assessment of patients with cognitive neurological problems to enable early diagnosis of dementia and treatment with cognitive enhancing medication .
Main aims
- To support patients and carers through the assessment and diagnostic process
- To provide information to patients and sign post them to support services across the health and social care boundaries in the city
- Close working relationships with older adults psychiatry, liaison psychiatry services and younger onset dementia services Alzheimer's Sheffield
Referral Criteria
Under 65 years of age with cognitive problems. We do see older adults referred from older adults psychiatry and neurology clinics with more complex needs.
Multidisciplinary clinic patients seen jointly by a neurologist and a senior occupational therapist to enable comprehensive holistic assessment
Access to specialist neuroscience investigations that may include MRI scanning, EEG, CSF analysis, SPECT and DAT scanning .
More complex cases or where diagnostic uncertainty exists are referred for detailed neuropsychology, supported by team of experienced neuropsychologists with research and academic interest and clinical expertise.
In home assessments with the Neuro Outreach Team therapists to determine patient safety, and enablement of patient independence in the community setting.

Research
The memory services department is a research active zone and actively supports the National Insitute for Health Research's It's Ok to Ask campaign. This encourages patients to ask their doctor or consultant about how they can get involved in clinical research and improve treatments in the NHS.
