Fracture Liaison Service

Individuals who have experienced a low trauma fracture are at increased risk of having osteoporosis and sustaining further fractures.

However, only about 50% of individuals over the age of 50 who sustain a fracture actually have osteoporosis and require treatment.

The liaison service aims to systematically identify individuals presenting to the hospital with a fracture to offer fracture risk assessment to those who have not previously been scanned.

Patients are identified in the fracture clinics and trauma wards.

Those requiring assessment are invited to attend an appointment in the Metabolic Bone Centre and the results of their assessment are sent to their GP with recommendations for treatment and follow-up
