Andrew Lumley, Biomedical Scientist
Andrew's work is a wonderful example of how together every role makes a difference and behind every moment there is always a dedicated team of professionals working to support patients.
"I work in the haematology, coagulation and transfusion lab, testing patients’ blood for various things. We also ensure the blood is compatible that we select for transfusion. We work 24/7 so someone is always here and always available.
"The most obvious example of how my role impacts on patient care is the blood transfusion support we give. I also help in the diagnosis and treatment for various other blood disorders, such as sickle cell and leukaemia, alongside many others.
"Although we do not interact directly with patients, we are only one step away from them. Our presence in the building is essential, as our work cannot be done remotely.
"We receive a large number of samples, which our support workers allocate to the appropriate departments before booking them into our laboratory IT systems. They also assist with analyser maintenance and troubleshooting.
"My proudest moments include ensuring safe blood transfusion products – in an emergency we can provide patients’ blood group and matched blood ready within 10 minutes of a sample arriving in the lab. I am also proud to assist in diagnosing and treating a range of blood disorders.
"In a world seemingly being taken over by AI and computers, we are still very much needed, even though the technology we use has advanced a lot in the 20 years I have been doing the job!"
