Urology

Urology is a surgical speciality, covering the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder in both men and women and the prostate and male reproductive organs.

Based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, our large multi-disciplinary department deals with all aspects of urology and uses the latest advances in the field to help better manage urological conditions and improve the quality of patients’ lives.

We are led by 16 consultant urologists, and provide a local urology service to the Sheffield city region with, additionally, the provision of both general and sub-specialist services to a wider catchment area within North Trent both nationally and internationally.

We see an average of 8,500 new outpatients a year, 25,000 follow up outpatient appointments and undertake approximately 6,200 planned and 2,400 non-elective and surgical procedures a year.

Many of our consultants are leaders in their specialist fields, who are nationally and internationally renowned for their work.

Outpatients clinics are also provided in Chesterfield and Doncaster and a specialist spinal injuries/neurourology service is provided at the Northern General Hospital.

  • National referral centre for reconstructive urology including complex urethral reconstructive work, mesh removal, urogenital fistulae, and joined-up working with the second biggest spinal injuries unit in the country to assess and manage complex urological issues in spinal injuries and spina bifida patients including a cauda equine service
  • Strong research focus, helping to bring many innovations and ground-breaking international and national trials in both cancer therapy and the investigation and medical and surgical management of all aspect of disorders of the urinary tract in both men and women to the Department
  • Multidisciplinary team working which enables our surgeons to work closely with specialist urological nurses and a number of other medical specialties
  • Establishment of the Sheffield Pelvic Institute – a collaborative programme between urology, urogynaecology and colorectal surgery
  • Urological training unit facility, with visiting international fellows and surgeons, junior and senior trainees fostering research, clinical collaboration and education within the department
  • Member of the European Reference Network eUROGEN which aims to improve diagnosis and create more equitable access to high-quality treatment and care for patients with rare urogenital diseases and complex conditions needing highly specialised surgery.
