Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a specialty focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that can affect the joints, tendons, muscles, ligaments (the musculoskeletal system) and multisystem inflammatory disorders. The Rheumatology Team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STHNHSFT) provide a comprehensive range of general and specialist rheumatology clinical services to the population of Sheffield and the wider South Yorkshire region. We are part of the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Directorate at STHNHSFT.

The Rheumatology service run clinics at three sites: the MSK hub at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Metabolic Bone/Rheumatology Centre at the Northern General Hospital and the Graves Sports Centre.

We are a large team and include Rheumatology doctors (Consultants and Resident Doctors), Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacist and Podiatrist.

What we do

  • Provide care for those age 16 and upwards.
  • Treat a wide spectrum of conditions – for an overview of rheumatology conditions please see www.sheffieldachesandpains.com
  • Run clinics at three sites: the MSK hub at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the Metabolic Bone/Rheumatology Centre at the Northern General Hospital and the Graves Sports Centre. We have a Day Case unit based in the MSK hub at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
  • We have a team of Specialist Nursing staff who run their own clinics as well as supporting our day case work and we have our own team of specialist Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Pharmacists and Podiatrist.
  • We have access to the latest range of diagnostic investigations including ultrasound, MRI and PET scanners and a full range of laboratory services.
  • We also provide a telephone and email helpline for patients for help and advice.
  • In addition to our own clinics, we run joint clinics with several other services within the Hospital such as orthopaedics, dermatology, respiratory medicine, obstetrics and neurology and have further specialist links with the osteoporosis and sports medicine services and paediatric rheumatology at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
