What we do
We help to diagnose and monitor various diseases which affect the retina, optic nerves or visual cortex. We do this by using electrodes to record the electrical signals produced by the eyes and brain while our patients view moving patterns or flashes of light. Our tests are painless and non-invasive. The results provide information about how well the retinae and visual pathways are functioning.
Where we are
Our clinics run within the department of Ophthalmology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for testing of adults (aged 16 and over), and at the Sheffield Children’s hospital for testing of children (under 16s).
Maps are provided in the patient information resources linked below.
Patient information leaflets
Our patient information leaflets help you to understand the purpose of electrodiagnostic testing and what your appointment may involve.

Patient information videos
This child-friendly video produced by the University of Bradford runs through a typical electrodiagnostic clinic appointment. This is not based on our specific procedures at Sheffield but gives a good idea of what testing involves. The particular tests performed will be tailored to individual patient requirements.
