Searching: Health and Care Evidence

You can request a literature search on any topic to support your work, and we will send you high-quality evidence.
Research papers and information can be requested for a number of reasons including the development of guidelines, service improvement, care of a specific patient, CPD and research projects.

All you need to do is let us know what information you need, and we can do the searching for you. We search a wide variety of databases and aim to find the best available evidence for your particular clinical or non-clinical query.

If you would like to request a search, either email sth.library@nhs.net or complete this form.

Request an article

STH staff members can also request articles free of charge. If you want to request a full text version of an article, you can complete this form. Alternatively email details of the papers you are after to sth.library@nhs.net

We are here to help you find and critique relevant information. The library offers a wide variety of information skills sessions, which are available via MS Teams or face-to-face.

To book any of our sessions, contact us at sth.library@nhs.net

Literature searching

We deliver one to one training sessions on literature searching. This 1 hour session will talk you through building a comprehensive search strategy and selecting relevant articles.

Introductory evidence based practice

This one-day workshop introduces the concept of Evidence Based Practice, and provides an opportunity for participants to learn about different types of research, how to find evidence on clinical research databases, and how to appraise a clinical research paper.

Advanced evidence based practice

Over five days you will take an in-depth look at literature searching, research methods and critical appraisal. You will use the skills you've learned to conduct a small piece of research in your area and produce a poster to show your results.

Study skills

This two hour session is aimed at giving you the confidence to pursue new academic training opportunities. You will learn about evaluating sources, planning your time, how to read articles, note taking, reflective practice, essay structuring and referencing. This course is suitable for beginners and people who have not studied in a long time.

Writing for publication

This one-day workshop will assist candidates in taking the next steps in the process of publication. You will gain essential skills in literature searching, methodology writing, and journal selection, while learning the benefits of sharing your work with the wider healthcare community. It will be followed up by a Teams session for ongoing support.

Critical appraisal

We deliver sessions to groups on how to systematically evaluate research to judge its trustworthiness, validity, and relevance, using tools such as CASP.

Knowledge mobilisation

Knowledge Mobilization is the sharing, capture, creation, utilisation or reuse of organizational knowledge. The library can work with teams to ascertain how they can make better use of knowledge and information.

Journal club support

We offer support with setting up and running a journal club.

  • We can help find articles to appraise and supply copies for you
  • Advise on the various critical appraisal tools and how they may be used
  • Talk you through the process and be available to attend your meeting
  • See our guide for more information on setting up a club

We use KnowledgeShare as our current awareness tool. If you sign up to KnowledgeShare, you will receive personalised email updates which help you keep up to date with current research to support your clinical practice and professional development.

You can tailor it to be clinical or non-clinical, broad or specific, and you can restrict updates to your setting or a patient age range. KnowledgeShare includes guidelines, policy documents and a wide range of summarised evidence so that you will not be inundated with primary research articles. You can select your updates to be sent monthly or two-weekly.

KnowledgeShare is available to all staff at STH.
