Hepatology is part of the gastroenterology department at the South Yorkshire NHS Trust. The specialist team assesses patients with abnormal liver function tests and cares for patients with acute and chronic liver disorders.
We provide inpatient care on our specialist Gastroenterology and Hepatology ward at Northern General Hospital and offer outpatient and daycase services across both trust sites -Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH) and Northern General Hospital (NGH).
We work closely with alcohol nurse led services to help patients withdraw from alcohol safely and efficiently.
We provide first-class hepatology care and continually improving the service we provide our patients. As part of this, we are committed to an ongoing programme of service and quality improvement for accreditation with the national Improving Quality in Liver Services (IQILS) programme.

We have two dedicated gastroenterology and hepatology wards at NGH where we look after patients with liver, bile duct and pancreatic diseases. The two wards (Hadfield 3 and Hadfield 4) have 30 beds each.
We run general hepatology and specialized hepatology clinics (including fatty liver disease, dedicated autoimmune liver disease and transitional liver service) across both hospital sites. We also run a dedicated hepatobiliary-pancreatic cancer clinic once a week at NGH. Hepatology consultants also supervise once a week nurse led alcohol care clinic.
We offer a day case paracentesis service at both hospital sites and patients are managed either at CIU at RHH or at Brearley day case ward at NGH.
We have a team of four trained hepatology specialist nurses who independently run the weekly stable cirrhosis clinic, elective paracentesis, assist us in elective variceal banding endoscopy list and responds to the nurse help line.

NGH is one of the largest tertiary NHS Trusts in the country and is the referral centre for the South Yorkshire network, which covers a population of over 1 million. We are a team of seven consultant hepatologists, fully supported by specialist nurses and interventional radiology advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services. The hepatology team helps deliver a responsive community, local, and tertiary hepatology service including out of hours gastrointestinal bleed cover for district general hospitals including Barnsley, Doncaster and Roterham. We also run the well-established monthly joint liver clinic with Leeds transplant hepatologist team assessing potential patients for liver transplant assessments and co-managing patients post liver transplant.
