Our Red Blood Cell Disorder Service is led by a specialist multidisciplinary team which cares for patients with haemoglobinopathies (sickle cell disease and thalassaemias) and rare inherited anaemias. We are one of the leading specialist centres for non-malignant haematology with nationally renowned expertise in the investigation and management of red cell disorders.
We provide a wide range of services for our patients, including day care treatment, inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, specialised laboratory testing services, and comprehensive management of women with red blood cell disorders during pregnancy. This is provided by our specialist medical team, clinical nurse specialists, dedicated clinical psychologist and services provided jointly with other specialties in the hospital, such as endocrine, kidney and liver experts, and maternity services. We provide care for approximately 150 adult patients with inherited red blood cell disorders in our region and coordinate services for over 700 patients with sickle cell disease across the Yorkshire and North East of England.
