General surgery

The General Surgery department is part of the Surgical Services group. It is one of the biggest groups in the hospital and has over 400 staff including 24 surgeons who operate on over 7,000 patients each year. The department also deals with over 6,700 emergencies each year.

The department is spread across the Northern General Hospital and Royal Hallamshire Hospital sites and provides a general service that includes treatment of problems such as in-growing toenails and hernias. General surgery also offers specialist services in:

  • Gastric and oesophageal surgery including bariatric surgery (Oesophagogastric Surgery)
  • Liver and pancreas surgery (Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery)
  • Coloproctology and stoma therapy (Colorectal Surgery)
  • Sarcoma Surgery
  • Endocrine Surgery
  • Breast Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Investigations

The Trust’s General Surgery department is a national specialist centre for liver, endocrine, oesophageal and pancreatic surgery and offers a wide range of services including emergency admissions, cancer operations, endoscopies and day case services.

General Surgery is based at both hospital sites, with wards at the Northern General and Royal Hallamshire Hospitals.
