Endoscopy

We do different types of endoscopies to help find and treat health problems.

An Endoscopy is when a thin tube with a small camera on the end goes into your body through your nose, mouth, or bottom. The camera shows a clear picture of the inside of your body on a screen. Sometimes, a small bit of tissue (called a biopsy) is taken for testing.

Types of Endoscopy

Here are some of the most common types of endoscopy:

  • Colonoscopy/Flexible Sigmoidoscopy to check your bowels
  • ERCP - used to check the bile and pancreatic ducts
  • EUS – combines ultrasound with endoscopy
  • Gastroscopy - looks inside your stomach and throat

2-Week Wait Appointments

If your GP has referred you for an urgent appointment due to a suspected serious condition (such as cancer), we aim to see you within 14 days. If you have been referred because your GP thinks you might have cancer, you can find more information here (link coming soon).

Urgent Appointments

If you have a non-emergency health concern that requires immediate attention, such as a severe infection or a flare-up of a chronic condition, you may need an urgent appointment. In this case we aim to see you within 6 weeks

Please note that there is currently a wait for non-urgent appointments.

Booking Your Appointment

Our team will call you when we have a date for your appointment. Please make sure we have your correct phone number. If we can’t reach you, we’ll send a letter asking you to call us.

If we are unable to contact you, we will remove you from the waiting list and notify your GP. If your symptoms persist, your GP will need to make a new referral.

You can only change your appointment date once. Please let us know as soon as you can if you need to change it, so we can give your slot to someone else. If you miss your appointment, we’ll usually send you back to your doctor for further care.

We’ll send you a letter with details of any steps you need to follow before your appointment.

Some people need a pre-assessment to talk about the details of their procedure. If you need one, we’ll send you a phone appointment date along with your endoscopy letter. Not all endoscopies need this, so if you don’t get an appointment, it means you don’t need it. If the time isn’t good for you, please call our admin team at 0114 271 2166 to arrange a new time.

As we are a teaching hospital, students who are supervised by trained staff may be involved in your care. This helps them learn but doesn’t affect your care. Let us know if you don’t want students involved, and we’ll respect your wishes.

Research helps improve care for everyone. You can help by joining a research study at our hospital. Ask your healthcare team during your appointment if you want to know more. They’ll be happy to share details about any studies you may join.
